Standing Liberty Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1569
1916 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 Full Head PQ. Fully white coin. Unstoppable in terms of choice surface preservation, both sides are satin frosted and essentially tone-free, a coin distinctly above the norm when it comes to aesthetic appeal. Struck with preciseness only now and then found on this key issue, all of Liberty's gown folds show completely, as does the shield with its tiny rivets (the rivets would be changed in size for the 1917 Type 1, and changed a second time for the Type 2 issues struck in 1917-30). A legendary rarity in this series, always commanding a lot of attention. It's rise in the world has been steady, strong, unhindered by even the few economic setbacks of the last century. Pop 106; 68 in 65; 9 in 66; 4 in 67. (PCGS # 5705) .
Estimated Value $23,000 - 25,000.

Lot 1572
1917 Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. Type 1. NGC graded MS-66 Full Head. A sparkling white gem. Bright silver color bursts from original surfaces unmarred by tarnish or spotting. A strong strike as well, makes this a desirable specimen. Pop 256; 55 finer.

United States silver coins struck in 1916 and early 1917 have a "textured" luster, almost velvety, unlike anything before or since except for a few Commemorative coins. The velvety texture is most notable on sharp Mint State specimens of the new designs: Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter, Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The closest one can come in comparison is on the very rare Matte Proofs and Satin Finish Proofs also struck in the teens. The present Standing Liberty Type 1 Quarter shows this textured luster to its fullest (and, we might add, quite alluring) effect. We encourage all collectors to examine such coins for their beauty and artistry, since this was American coin art at its zenith.
Estimated Value $1,300 - 1,400.

Lot 1578
1917-D Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. Type 2. NGC graded MS-66 Full Head. Delicately toned. Luminous satiny surfaces give a granite-hard foundation for the lovely shades of toning. That being the case, this date is also difficult to find fully struck, with nice detail in Liberty's head. The present coin retains boldness where it counts from a strictly above-average strike. When this beautiful coin's time arrives to sell, we're certain that the restlessness that prospective buyers are feeling will reassert itself as the tension mounts.Pop 4; 2 finer in 67.

Lot 1583
1918/7-S Liberty Standing Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded AU-58 Full Head. Old green label holder. A clear-surfaced pale toned AU58 with highly concentrated luster in many areas and almost ostentatious eye appeal. Don't mind the hint of weakness at the centers as typically seen, for this has been taken into consideration by the grading service. Reams of paper have been printed describing the background of this unusual rarity. Distilled, the history is that during the stress of heavy minting demand during the First World War, the home mint in Philadelphia, which makes the dies for the branch mints, was working overtime in December 1917 to keep up with demand for new working dies as well as preparing last minute dies for the current 1917 coins. Inadvertently, the die steel from one 1918-dated die was impressed into a 1917 hub, creating the 8 over 7 error. Unnoticed, this was sent to San Francisco, where a limited number of coins were struck and put into circulation. The rest is history. Pop 11; 7 finer.
Estimated Value $11,500 - 12,500.
